Thursday, 8/25/11 Update

Posted on 25 August 2011 by Lou Russo

I can’t do a live report today because we are doing some preparations for the hurricane, however, I will give you a quick update. Russ Yeager landed a 8 lb 2 oz fluke on this last drift and is the new leader in the August Flukemaster pool. Other than that it has been a very slow day.

Wednesday, 8/24/11 Report

Posted on 25 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Northern Raritan Bay
Tide: Low 10:24am
Water Temp: 75.3 Degrees
Wind:  WNW 8kts
Moon Phase: 25% Waning

There are only 32 days left to capture your fluke dreams! The season is flying by. Don’t miss out!!

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

August Flukemaster Update
Mr. August Steve Kerry is still in the lead in the August Flukemaster Pool with a 5 lb 4 oz fish. The pot is $370.00.

Hurricane Irene Update
It looks as if Irene will pass east of New Jersey on Sunday night/Monday morning.

To follow Irene follow this link.

Conditions
Outgoing tide for the first few hours of the trip. The wind was WSW at the dock, but it is coming right out of the west as we set up. It is supposed to shift to SW and blow near 20 kts as the day goes on. It will most likely shift with the tide. We will have very good drifting conditions where we are setting up.

First Drift
BOOM BOOM POW!!! . . . Great start to the morning. First fish on the boat looks to be over 5 pounds and was caught by none other than Joe Mattis. Jeff Lukowich pulled up a nice 4 1/2 pound fish as well on the drift. We had super fishing with a good number of keepers coming aboard!

Second Drift
Another good drift. The ratio wasn’t as kind on this one, but the fishing was great. Matthew Balcony caught his first keeper fluke ever on this one!

Third Drift
We are at the bottom of the tide and the fishing did slow up somewhat, however, we did have some shining moments. Mr. August Steve Kerry almost topped his monthly fish, but fell a couple of ounces short with a 5 lb 3 oz fish. It is good to see some baby beasts come up.

Fifth Drift
Lost the current and lost the bite. We did catch another nice one this time by John Lipari. Making a move to see if we can catch the beginnng of the outgoing current.

Sixth Drift
Like I said earlier the wind would come due south and increase on the tide change and it did. It’s blowing 17 kts and has completely shut down the bite. We catch the sea robins and a very occasional fluke. Pretty tough going right now.

Steve Nosti holding his 4 1/2 pound fluke.

Seventh Drift
Not many fluke on this one. Going to head to some holes that are to our south.

Eighth Drift
We made the right move and struck a little bit of fluke gold with almost everything being a keeper. Steve Kerry put on a clinc by putting 3 keepers in his bucket all over 4 pounds.

Ninth Drift
Finished the day off with a little shot of keepers.

New best friends (Ray, your out!) Bob & Jeff showing off some of their catch.

We caught some fish in the morning before the tide change. We went through a stretch where nothing wanted to bite, but once we got some of the flood water everything turned on. Most of the keepers were very good sized with many of the fish over 4 pounds. Steve Kerry who is no stranger to big fish caught 4 fluke all over the 4 pound mark. Joe Mattis caught the biggest of the day weighing 6 lb 1 oz and Mike Wineski was high hook with 5 keepers.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Tuesday, 8/23/11 Report

Posted on 23 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Sandy Hook
Tide: Low 9:17am
Water Temp: 74.1 Degrees
Wind:  NNW 18kts but diminishing
Moon Phase: 33% Waning

There are only 33 days left to capture your fluke dreams! The season is flying by. Don’t miss out!!

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

We began the day with a heavy dose of northwest wind. Once it blew itself out we began to catch the fluke. The last drift we made was excellent with fireball fluke action. We are running up to make our fourth drift of the day off Sandy Hook. We will see if the good times continue!

Fifth Drift
Not as good as the last, but we did throw a few keepers in the buckets. Going to move into the channel.

Sixth Drift
BOOM!! Hot fluke action with some very nice fish coming over the rail. We have to move for an outbound ship. Going to jump back in once it clears.

Seventh Drift

We finished the day with very good fishing.

The fluking was very good today. We had moments where there were 5 – 10 fish on at once. As always some people made out better than other. Jake Branndon was high hook with 5 fish and Al Skowronski won the pool with a 4 1/2 pound fluke.

And as I said, some people made out better than others.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Monday, 8/23/11 Report

Posted on 23 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Terrible weather and terrible fishing. The back side of the front that came through on Sunday had a lot of wind to it, and that made for absolute horrendous conditions with 10 & 12 ounce sinkers being the norm. Add some coffee colored water from the run off and it made for a very long day. We put some fish in the boat, but it was not good by any means. This fishing will get better in a day or two.

Weekend Update

Posted on 22 August 2011 by Lou Russo

We had super fishing for most of the weekend. Saturday was the better of the two days with non stop fluking action. The ratio was not too kind, but the fluke were flying over the rail like hot cakes! Bill Venezia was the pool winner with a 4 1/2 pounder. On Sunday we started out just like Saturday with excellent fishing, however the wind came up pretty hard out of the southwest and basically shut down the fishing. There are only 34 days left to the 2011 fluke season and the fishing has been great. Don’t miss out!

Wednesday, 8/17/11 Report

Posted on 18 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Northeast Raritan Bay
Tide: High 10:47am
Water Temp: 74.0 Degrees
Wind: NW 4 kts
Moon Phase: 87% Waning

There are only 39 days left to capture your fluke dreams! The season is flying by. Don’t miss out!!

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – NW wind and an incoming tide for most of the morning. . . August Flukemaster Steve Kerry is here to to defend his place at the top of the monthly pool. Steve took the lead on Friday with a 5 lb 4 oz fluke. . . The sun is shining for once and we are anxious to put a hurting on fluke! It’s time to get it on! . . .

Mr. August

First Drift
Despite a slow start we managed to put a half dozen keepers in the boat. Joe Mattis lead the way with 2 in the box.

Second Drift
The fishing is slow right now, but we are benefiting from an above average keeper ratio. Going to run up and make another drift.

Third Drift
We had some shining moments on the change of tide with 8 to 10 fish on for a good 40 minutes. Running up for a redux.

Fourth Drift
We had a change of tide bite on the last one, but this was the complete opposite. With the current easing off we can now jump into Ambrose Channel, or the Super Fluke Highway as some of you know it, for the first time this season.

Fifth Drift
We are picking away at the fluke with an occational keeper coming over the rail. The above aveage ratio that I mentioned earlier is gone, and it has become mostly shorts. Gary Thompson pulled up a nice 4 1/4 pounder that destroyed a Spro.

Gary Thompson with his 4 1/4 lb fluke.

Sixth Drift
Pretty good fishing again despite bad conditions. The wind came around out of the east on the tide change. Combine that with an outgoing tide and the difficulty level went up to an 8.
The Bow People do it again!

Fluking was excellent today. We had some very good moments on the change of tide, and some people made out well with the keepers. Joe Mattis was high hook with 5 fish and James Cogliano had 4 in the box. Many people caught well over 20 and 30 fish, however, the ratio was not kind to them. Kyle Edson was the king of the hill, winning the pool with a 4 1/2 pound fluke.

Kyle Edson = Flukestar!

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Saturday, 8/13/11 Report

Posted on 13 August 2011 by Lou Russo

We began our morning with a little treat. Anchored just outside of our harbor was a sailing replica of one of Henry Hudsons ship the “Half Moon“.

The Half Moon is a full scale replica of the original Dutch ship of exploration sailed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch East India Company in 1609. The original Half Moon was the first European ship to document entry into what we now call the Delaware Bay and River, and to explore the Hudson River to its navigable limits.

After we took some pictures we made our way out into the ocean where we would have a very good day of fluking. We caught a ton of fish and threw a lot back, but overall it was a fairly good day. High hook was Bill Mastriconca with 4 keepers, and Pennsylvania’s own Grant Wilcox was the money man, winning the pool with a 4 lb 8 oz fish.

Friday, 8/12/11 Report

Posted on 12 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Sandy Hook Channel
Tide: High 7:45am
Water Temp: 77.7 Degrees
Wind: WNW 7 kts
Moon Phase: 98% Full

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – WNW breeze with outgoing water for the whole trip will make for some very good conditions. Hopefully it does not get too fast.

First Drift
We have a new leader in the August Flukemaster and his name is Steve Kerry! Don’t have a weight on the fish as of yet, but it will be in the 5 pound range. . . The drifting conditions are a little fast to start out with the combination of wind, current, full moon together, but we sinkered up and rumbled through it. Going up for another!!

Second Drift
Let this one go up and out of the channel because of an outbound ship. Picked away at the fish with a couple more keepers coming over the rail. The ratio is not very good.

We had a couple of firsts on the second drift. Reese Gumprecht caught his first keeper ever and Mimi Stinson caught her first fluke. Good times!!!

Third Drift
It got a little fast on this one. Going to make the next one along the beach.

Fourth Drift
We are picking away at the fluke with a few keepers mixed in. . . . President Obama was leaving Manhattan and made a fly by with Marine 1 & 2 along with 3 Chinooks and some F16′s or F18′s as air support. I took a couple of quick picks as he was passing. I didn’t have time to get too many.

Marine 1 or 2.                         One of the Chinooks.             Marine 1 or 2 overhead.

Fifth Drift
This one was not good. We are going to change up the area for the next one. . . We caught a couple of Amberjack’s today. This is the second day that we have seen them. They are actually called Banded Rudderfish, but they are in the Amberjack family.

Sixth Drift
What an aquarium we fish in. For the second day in a row we have squid following the bait to the surface. . . We caught a ton of fish again, but most of them were sea robins.

Seventh Drift
Finished the day with a decent pick of fish.

We had a good day of fishing with a sub par keeper ratio. High hook caught 3 keepers, and Steve Kerry is the new Mr. August with a 5 lb 4 oz fluke.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Thursday, 8/11/11 Report

Posted on 12 August 2011 by Lou Russo

We caught a lot of fish today and we threw a whole lot back. The ratio was not very good at all. High hook had 3 keepers, and for the first time this year we had an all out sea robin attack. Jimmy Bufis and Dave Plumacher tied for the pool with a 3 3/4 pound fluke.

Wednesday, 8/10/11 Report

Posted on 12 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Raritan Reach Channel
Tide: Low Noon
Water Temp: 78.8 Degrees
Wind: W 9 kts
Moon Phase: 89% Full

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – West wind + outgoing water = very good conditions. It will be too fast for us to fish in the ocean channels, and from what we saw yesterday, we are better off staying in the Reach.

First Drift
We had some shining moments on this one. Joe Mattis led the way with 2 keepers. Had to move out of the channel for an inbound tug and barge and an outbound ship. Once they clear we will jump back in and look to do more damage!

Second Drift
It took a little while to get things going again after the ship traffic, but it turned back on. We picked at the shorts with a few keepers coming over the rail. Joe Mattis, who only catches big fish, added to his total and now has 3 keepers.

3 in the box for Mr. Mattis.

Third Drift
The conditions are a little fast, and the sea robins took over. We are going to make a move to a new area. An area that we haven’t touched in 2011. We will see what swims!!

Fourth Drift
Not so good. We tried some holes that are in the bay with little success. Making a slight shift to the southeast of where we are to try another set of holes. Maybe we strike gold!

Fifth Drift
Excellent fluking with some nice size fish mixed in. The ratio isn’t great, but some people are faring much better than others with the keepers. Joe Mattis remains high hook with 5 keepers.

Sixth Drift
We still catch the fluke well, however, the ratio was the pits on this one. Running up to make one more.

The fluking was excellent today with some people making out much better than others with the legal fish. Joe Mattis was high hook with 5 fish including the pool winner which was 4 pounds.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Tuesday, 8/9/11 Report

Posted on 10 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Raritan Reach Channel
Tide: Low 10:59am
Water Temp: 78.8 Degrees
Wind: E 8 kts
Moon Phase: 81% Full

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – Wind against tide to begin the trip.

First Drift
We pulled up on the Reach to start the morning and caught some shorts and one keeper landed by Ken Legend. We have no movement at all, but there are some fish here. We are going to change the area and head east a good ways. Might come back to this after the tide change.

Second Drift
We made a 3 hour drift out in the deep blue sea and hammered away at the fluke. Running up for another.

Third Drift
Another good drift. The only problem is the ratio is terrible. We catch a lot of fish, and we throw a lot of fish back.

This is crazy! A 14″ fluke was caught on a 10″ Gulp squid.

The fishing today was excellent. Catching keepers was another story. We made our first drift in the Reach, and despite unfavorable conditions we picked a few fish. Rather than struggle with no movement we opted to head into the ocean where we would find a very good body of fluke. We had some shining moments with 6, 7, and 8 fish on at a time, however, we suffered from a poor ratio. One angler told me that he caught over 40 fish with nothing to show for it. Kenny Havens was the FlukeStar of the day, winning the pool and earning high hook honors with 3 fish. This was a step in the right direction after the way things were the past three days. Looking forward to see what tomorrow brings!

Ken Legend won today’s pool and was high hook.

And of course the catch of the day.

The O.J. glove has been discovered!!!
“If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit!”

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Location: Raritan Reach Channel
Tide: Low 10:15am
Water Temp: 78.1 Degrees
Wind: NW 11 kts
Moon Phase: 72% Full

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – We will start the day with the last couple of hours of outgoing water. There is a decent NW breeze that will help push us along, however, once we get the flood it will be wind against tide.

First Drift
Started in the channel and left off where we were yesterday with the shorts. Going to completely change up the area and make a move to the north.

Second Drift
Not much better. Only a few shorts.

Third Drift
We catch some slammer blues, sea robins, and small fluke, but very few keepers.

Fourth Drift
My fillet knife will lay cold today.

It has not been a good day of fluking. I can not publish pain! I will talk to you tomorrow. Same fluke time, same fluke station.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

Thursday, 8/4/11 Report

Posted on 05 August 2011 by Lou Russo

Location: Raritan Reach Channel
Tide: High – Noon
Water Temp: 76.3 Degrees
Wind: E 15 kts
Moon Phase: 28% Full

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – We have a stiff east wind to deal with today. Combine that with an incoming tide and your looking at super speedway conditions. We will get set up and massage the problem!

First Drift
We are rolling around, 6 and 8 ounce sinkers are the norm, and we put a few keepers in the boat. Have to move for an outbound ship. Going to get set up again once it passes.

Second Drift
We might be in for a tough day. This wind has definetly put a damper on the fishing. Making a move to the east a ways.

It was not a good day with the east wind shutting down the fluking. The forecast for tomorrow looks good. We look to get back on track then!

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

If you are looking into coming out on one of our evening trips please look at our schedule because we have some private charters coming up. These charters will only affect the evening trips.

Conditions – An easterly breeze combined with the flood tide will make for excellent conditions. . . The fishing yesterday was not good at all. We get started here today with big fluke dreams! Hopefully we can get the fishing that we had back!!

I’m trying to get everything caught up after a VERY busy week and a half. . We have excellent fishing here today. I will get up to date as the day progresses.

First Drift
Super Duper fishing!!! High hook on the drift caught 4 keepers. Have to move for a ship.

Second Drift
Another very good drift. We have one person close to his limit and a few more with 4 and 5 keepers.

Third Drift
We have the wind against the tide conditions now, but we are still catching them. They have added up nicely for some. . . Most of the fish caught are loaded with shrimp again.

We had a very good day of fishing. High hook caught 7 keepers, and there were three others with 6 fish. . . Once again chartreuse Gulp was the money bait.

Check back tomorrow for more live updates.

We caught them again today, but it was not like it was. Don’t get me wrong, the fluking was ok, it just was not what we had. High hook was Jimmy Chambers with 6 keepers.
