Well, we got ours today!! We caught the change of tide bite for the first two hours in the morning, and we caught it again in the afternoon. Super fishing on both. The first drift of the day lasted two hours, and we hammered away at the fluke. Many people put 3, 4, and 5 keepers in their buckets during this drift. We carried them as long as we could and then moved on. We had a couple of hours of slow fishing during the late morning, but after noon we caught the beginning of the outgoing water, and beat them up again. We had 2 customers with their limit and a quite a few with 4 and 5 keepers. Rob Morison won today's pool with a 5 pound fluke, and Anthony "Barker" Rullo and Rich Legotte were the all-stars of the day catching their limits. Overall today was probably the best day of fluking and keeping yet.
Rob Morison won Saturday's pool with this 5 pound fluke.
Today was a bit of a struggle. We had a slight northwest breeze up against an incoming tide to begin the day, giving us horrible drifting conditions. When the tide changed at 11:00, so did the wind. It came around out of the southeast just enough to keep us from drifting out with the tide. We did pick the shorts, with an occasional keeper being landed, but it was a far cry from what it was on Tuesday and yesterday. Ended up with 26 keepers on the day with the largest being a 5 1/4 pound fluke caught by Ted Surick of Carteret, NJ.
Joe Pyontek won today's pool with this 6 pound fluke.
This morning we headed back to the area where we had some really good fishing yesterday. We caught the last two hours of the flood tide, and had a decent pick of fish. It was no where near as good as yesterday, but it was not too bad either. We lost the bite on the change of tide. Made another long drift down the channel edge slowly picking the fish. They did add up for some. Tim O'Rourke, Freehold, NJ was high hook with 5 fish, and there was a few others with 3 and 4 keepers. Joe Pyontek won today's pool with a 6 pound fluke.
We had excellent fishing for the first half of today's trip. Wind was light out of the northwest with an outgoing tide which made for perfect drifting conditions. Our first drift was a long one with non-stop action and 20 keepers coming over the rail. Anthony Rullo won today's pool with a 4lb 10oz fluke, and was also high hook with 4 keepers.
Surprise, surprise!!! Another day with east winds. . . . The wind and heavy ship traffic made for some tough fishing today. We had a few good shots of fish, but it should be much better than it is. This is directly due to the weather. June has to arrive sometime!!
Today felt more like April 1st than it did June 15th. Unbelievable weather. And this east wind seems like it's never going to end. . . Fishing today was ok. A lot of fish were caught and a few nice fish too. The pool winner was a 5 1/2 pound fluke and high hook had 4.
Today's report is not a good one as our day ended on very sad note. While fishing today one of our good friends and regular, Harvey Weyouche, passed away while doing what he loved doing the most. Harvey was a good friend to many and a great fisherman. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and fished with him. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends.
We had a pretty good day of fishing today. The fluke have finally moved into our end of the bay and we are catching them only a few minutes from the dock. We also saw an improvement with the keeper ratio. John Bottles was today's high hook with 3 keepers. Nola and Steve Grenley, Island Heights, NJ, caught 3 keepers on the day with Steve's 4 pounder taking the pool.
Today's fishing was a step below what it was over the weekend. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The ratio is still way down, somewhere around 25 - 1. High hook had 3 keepers, and Paul's friend Jeff caught a 3 1/2 pound sea bass.
We finally have a leader for this month's pool. Danny Martin stepped up and put a 5 pound fish in the boat on Sunday, taking the leader spot for June. This month's jackpot is now up to $300.
The fluke fishing was again very good today, but the ratio remains a problem. A couple people caught between 40 - 50 fish with only a keeper or two to show. We did see a couple big fish. Bill Reid won the pool with a 7.1 pound fluke, and Danny Martin, Bayonne, NJ caught a 5 pound fish.
The good fishing that we had last week returned today. Plenty of fluke caught all around the boat. The ratio was low, somewhere around 25 - 1. Rob Morison was high hook with 4 keepers, 3 of which he caught back to back to back in a matter of 5 minutes.
Another day of tough fluking, as we only managed to catch a few keepers for the day, one of which weighed in at 6lb 1 oz. (He was NOT in the pool for the month of June) We again covered a lot of ground trying to locate the fish we had on Saturday, but no one has been able to find them. It is very frustrating!! . . . We did get some good news. Fluking on the northern most part of the bay had been very good. The only problem is that it is deep in New York waters. Those fish will eventually migrate into our end of the bay, the only question is when. For myself, along with everyone else, it can't come soon enough!!
If yesterday was the right hook to the temple, than today was the uppercut to the chin. It was another tough day of fishing. We did see a little more shorts than the past two days, but it was still not good. We covered a lot of bottom, but could not produce a steady bite of fluke. Larry Gove, So. Bound Brook, NJ, won today's pool with a 4 pound fluke.
