Today was somewhat of a breakout day with over 40 keepers on the boat up to 7.4 pounds. The day started slow with wind against tide conditions. Fished all the usual spots around the Hook catching plenty of fish with an occasional keeper mixed in. When the tide eased up a bit we made a move inshore and found some very nice fish. Don Cutrupi and John Bottles both caught 5 pounders and Larry McMahon caught a 7 lb 4oz fluke. It was by far the best day of keeping yet.Hopefully the trend continues!!

Fluking was not too bad today as we saw many fish come over the rail, however the majority of them were released back into the wild. We made drifts inside and outside of Sandy Hook, and also made one on the Knoll. Other than the drift on the Knoll, we caught fluke on all of them. The water temps are still low with an average around 59 - 60. Today was probably the best of the first three
days of the season. John Bottles was high hook today with 4 keepers.

Now I know why Bottles came up 2 short of his limit. Way too much time dreaming about sailboats.
Well the bar has been set for the Seasonal pool. Jim Handy jumped out to early lead with a 5.3 pound fluke taken this morning.
Day 2 of the season was much better than the first. The weather was perfect and we had very good conditions for drifting. Started fishing around the tip of the Hook and had a pick of sea robins and shorts. Made a few drifts in the ocean outside of Sandy Hook and had more fluke action and less robins. The keeper ratio was very low, somewhere around 25 - 1. We finished the day by the Bug Light with yet another pick of shorts and birds. The highlight of the day was a 5.3 pound fluke caught by Jim Handy. Today we had much better fishing than yesterday. We didn't keep a lot, but at least we saw a good number of fluke.
Opening day began with much more hope and hype than fish. As we made our way to the usual starting point for the beginning of the fluke season, we were met by a nice, stiff 20 - 25 knot easterly wind, which was not in the forecast. The wind along with an outgoing tide made for terrible fluking conditions. We had almost a full boat and only managed a hand full of keepers. It was and is always very frustrating when the fishing is poor and we have a large group of people. We could use some nice weather to warm up the water a little. The highest we read was 64 degrees in the shallows near the Coast Guard Station, and the average was around 59. Of the few people that were fortunate enough to catch a keeper, John Hannah was the king. John won the first fluke pool of the year with a 3.6 pound fish. Even though it was a disappointing day overall, it was good to get the season started again. To make an analogy, it was like going to Yankee stadium on opening day and seeing them get shelled 9 - 0. Your mad they lost, but it's a start and there is a long season ahead of us.
What a beautiful day to be on the water. Unfortunately, the fishing was not as good as the weather. We closed out our spring ling trips with disappointing fishing that was no where near as good as last week. Artie Martin was high hook with 14 ling.
Just a reminder that last of our Special Offshore Ling trips will be tomorrow from 7:30am - 4:00pm.
It was a long day of fishing today. A south wind had everything shut down. Eric was the only one who had any luck catching 1 keeper bass and 2 blues.
It was a slow night Friday. We made drop everywhere from Orchard to the eastern side of Romer and could only manage to get a pick of blues at the end of the trip. Rob Morison won the pool with a 5 pound bluefish.
We headed out to the same area we fished in the morning, and what do you know, the bass bit!! We had 13 keepers on the boat up to 36 inches, and a lot of blues mixed in as well. It has been a good week of bass fishing. Hopefully it continues!!!
The bass bite is on!!
