Another good trip for porgies and sea bass. We stayed inshore all day and had excellent fishing right from the start. The sea bass/ porgy ratio is about the same, and we also catch between 10 to 20 triggerfish a trip. Victor Ortiz, Jersey City, was the ultimate angler today. Victor not only won the pool with a sea bass, but he also had the largest porgy and triggerfish on the boat.
Our first bottom fishing trip of the fall was a success. Stayed inshore most of the day, and found fish on most of the drops we made, with the first and the last being the best. A very good amount of sea bass and porgies were caught with around 20 triggerfish as well. It was probably around 50/50 on the porgy/sea bass ratio.
Al Skowronski smiles with joy as his sea bass dwarfs the one caught by Russ Yeager only second later.
As Tropical Storm Hannah dealt us a disappointing end to the fluke season, we set our sights on a couple of new species of choice, and those species would be bluefish and bass.
It looks as if today might be the last fluking day of 2008 with Hannah slowly approaching our area. With that in mind, and everyone pumped up to put their final stamp on the season, we made our way to entrance of Ambrose Channel, and had some very good fishing for the day. Alot of fluke, some blues, and even a striper. There was a very good amount of life everywhere. We got most of the day in before the wind started hawkin and the tide was unbearable. Doug Kay and Keith Piskorski tied for the pool with two 4 pounders. (The images on the right are from earlier in the season. Both caught 10 pounders this year.) If today was the last fluking trip of the year(depending on Sunday), it was a good one. I want to thank everyone for a great season and hopefully we will see all of you for some jigging and bottom fishing.
We began our day fishing in the Reach. The conditions were favorable, but the fluking was not. Made our way out to Ambrose Channel and had some pretty good fishing with a very good number of shorts and an occasional keeper. In a fitting end to a fluking career, Joe Mehringer won today's pool. Joe is heading southwest to the land of the Cowboys. Farewell Joe!!
Conditions were perfect and the fluke wanted to eat. We were patient and stayed in the Reach all day as we put together a good day of fishing. Anglers caught anywhere from 5, 10, to 25 fish. High hook caught 4 keepers. Ended up with 36 keepers for 42 fisherman. The fishing slowed toward the end of the day as the outgoing tide went up against an east wind, and made for poor drifting. Pete Hahn won the pool with a 4 pound fish making it back-to-back Wednesday's taking the money.
Another tough day of fishing. Started the morning off Great Kills and caught a couple big fish weighing in at 6 and 5 pounds. Unfortunately that would be it for this area. Made our way to the Reach, and had no drift. Headed out to Sandy Hook Channel and had one decent drift where we picked some shorts and a couple of keepers, but by our second drift, we were going way too fast to even hold with a 12 ounce sinker. Headed back into the bay and died a slow death. Other than the 2 nice sized fish, it was a clunker of a day.
Another step in the right direction. We found fish along the Reach Channel again, and put together an OK day. The keeper ratio was nothing to get to excited about, but we did catch alot of fluke. Today's high hook was James Dicono with 4, and the pool winner was Steve Kerry with a 5 pound fluke.
