Thursday, 8/28/08 Report

We fished Ambrose, Chapel Hill, Sandy Hook Channel, and The Reach today and it was the same everywhere. We catch fish, but we do not catch enough keepers. Very Frustrating!!!

Wednesday, 8/27/08 Report

8.27.08.pool.jpg     Began the day with the wind still blowing out of the east. Headed to Great Kills to seek some shelter from the terrible conditions with the outgoing tide going up against the wind. Made a few drifts and caught a couple fish each drift. Nothing great but it was something. We did catch the majority of our keepers here. After the tide change we headed to West Bank and finished the day with a slow pick of mostly shorts. Not a good day of fishing at all, but it was a step above yesterday. Pete Hahn, Somerset, NJ, won today's pool with a 4 pound fluke.

Tuesday, 8/26/08 Report

Capt. John 8-26-2008 The legend does it again 004.jpg     Had a pretty stiff NE wind to start the morning which kept us from fishing in our usual spots. Tried a couple of new areas, but it was no good. Only a few keepers came up, and no where near the amount of short action that we are used to seeing. "The Legend" won the pool again with a 5 pound fluke. (Notice the bird about to peck The Legend's head)

Monday, 8/25/08 Report

8.25.08. al.jpg     Another Monday and another pool dominated by Al Gallo. Other then that note, nothing to report. Terrible fishing all day. The roll from yesterday had the fluke beat down, but hopefully with the nice forecast for tomorrow, things will turn back on.

OOHHhh AAHHhhh Bottles!!!

Sunday, 8/24/08 Report

8.23.08.assassin.jpg    Headed to Ambrose Channel and found a huge roll in the ocean due to a pretty good southeast wind overnight. Any time there is a big roll in the ocean the fluke tend not to bite, and this is exactly what happened today. We tried to hang in there and give it a go, but after a couple of hours, it was just not worth it. We headed back into the bay along the Reach and had the same results. Waited for the incoming water around noon so that the roll would be reduced, and made our way into the ocean  along Sandy Hook Channel. Ended up finishing the day with a very small shot of birds and shorts. It was just not a good day. Juan "The Assassin" Ortiz was at it again, finding a way to win the pool with a 5 pounder despite terrible conditions.

Saturday, 8/23/08 Report

8.23.08.james.jpg     Another day in Ambrose. Another day of very good fishing, and another day with a horrible ratio. It was the same fishing that we had the past two days. One after another. I'm sure there was alot of Ben-Gay and Icy-Hot being used by some customers after reeling in 10 to 20 fluke and the same amount of sea robins with an 8 ounce sinker attached. I just wish that we could keep more for everyone. James Dicono won today's pool with a beast of a 5 pound fluke.

Friday, 8/22/08 Report

8.22.08.legend.jpg     Good day of fishing in Ambrose Channel. The bottom is paved with fish, the only problem is finding keepers. It is not out of the ordinary to catch 25 to 30 shorts with 1 keeper. Whatever formula the "scientists" are using to measure the amount of fluke in the ocean is garbage!!!  I have seen more fluke caught and thrown more fish back this year than ever before. (Sorry for the small rant). Anyway, today's high hook was Joe Pep with 4 keepers and the pool winner was non other than "The Legend" Ken Havens with a 4 1/2 pound fluke.

Thursday, 8/21/08 Report

8.21.08.pool.jpg     Headed out to Ambrose Channel and found decent fishing after the change of tide. The keeper ratio was way down, but like I said yesterday, it's 2008. Today's high hook was Mike Russo with 3 keepers, and Chase won today's pool with a 4 pound fish.

18 Days Remaining

Just a reminder to all you Fluke-a-holics that there is only 18 days remaining in the 2008 Fluke Season. So, get your Spro's, Gulp, Gamakatsu's, or anything else that you feel will help you put an "I.G.M" on the season.
And you ask what does "I.G.M." stand for? Well, it stands for. . . .

I GOT MINE!!!!

Wednesday, 8/20/08 Report

8.20.08.bob.pool.jpg       It took a while to get things going, but the fluking bounced back today in Ambrose Channel. After the change of tide we began seeing more action with the shorts and keepers. The ratio wasn't terrific, but it's 2008, the ratio isn't going to be great. It was good to get back in gear and get some bites on the lines. Ended the day with 31 keepers for 27 fares. High hook was Freddie Leo with 4 fish and the pool winner was Boston Bob with a 4 pounder.

Tuesday, 8/19/08 Report

Tumbleweed_Dunes_copy.jpg     Ughhhh!!!!!   Another day of poor fishing. I know that i have been saying this for a couple of days, but I have a feeling that tomorrow is the breakout day. We will be a few days off the moon, and usually that's how long it takes for the fluke to turn back on.

Monday, 8/18/08 Report

8.18.08.rohner.pool.jpg     Fishing was not good again today. We made drifts in the Reach and Ambrose with little success. We did catch two big fish in Ambrose with one weighing in at 8 1/2 pounds and the other weighing 6.6 pounds. Hopefully tomorrow the bite will be back on.

Sunday, 8/17/08

8.17.08.png     Unless you were looking to catch a boat load of Sea Robin's, today stunk!! Pretty poor fluking. Blame it on the full moon. Barker won the pool with a 4 pound fish, making it two weekends in a row. Today's high hook on the sea robin's was Tim Steeger with 78. On a side note, farewell Joey Bottles. It was a good season. See you in '09!!

Saturday, 8/16/08 Report

8.16.08.12lb.jpg     Fishing was pretty good today on the eastern end of the Reach Channel. The conditions were good and we saw some big fish starting with the heaviest of the season to date. 1st time angler Diana Germadang, Jersey City, caught a 12 pound beast around mid-day, and chose to retire at the top of her game. Unfortunately for Diana, she was not in the pool. Today's pot was won by Kevin Meskill with a 5 pounder.

Thursday, 8/14/08 Report

Fishing was ok again, but catching keepers is still a struggle. We had one angler with 6 keepers, and we had one who caught 19 shorts without putting one in his cooler. It has been the same story for over a week. We are still fishing Ambrose Channel, but made a stop in the Reach as we were heading out in the morning. Didn't last long as we could only get a slow pick of fish going at the best. Hopefully the beasts will want to eat for the weekend.

Wednesday, 8/13/08 Report

8.13.08.joe.pool.jpg     It's been the same story for the past week. We catch alot of fish, but the majority of them go back. There certainly is not shortage of fish with some anglers catching 15, 20 even 30 shorts a day. I just wish we could do more to put keepers in the buckets. We ended the day with 27 keepers for 35 anglers. Not a horrible day, but very frustrating on our end. Joe Mehringer won today's pool with a 6 pound fluke.

Tuesday, 8/12/08 Report

8.12.08.steve.jpg     Another day in Ambrose and another day with decent fishing. Catching keepers is still a challenge. Some people made out better than others with the ratio, but overall it's the same story.

Monday, 8/11/08 Report

8.11.08.pat.jpg     Fishing to start the day wasn't too bad. We were in Ambrose Channel and had a pick of shorts with an occasional keeper coming over the rail, but once the storms came through, it put the kibosh on the fishing. Took an hour or so for the weather to pass. Made a move to the Reach to finish out the day and could only muster up a pick.

8.12.08.GREENHORN.jpg    Future "Greenhorn" Nick hold up his 2 keepers on the day.

Sunday, 8/10/08 Report

The fishing on Sunday was ok. Nothing spectacular, but it wasn't horrible either. Most of what we caught was released back into the wild. The Pat Attack was the only angler who had no trouble putting fish in the bucket. Pat ended up with 6 keepers and winning the pool with a 5 pound fluke.

Saturday's Pool Fish

8.9.08.ant.pool.jpg     Barker, Hoboken, NJ, won Saturday's pool with this 6 pound beast.

Saturday, 8/9/08 Report

Changed it up a little to start the day by making a stop along the Reach Channel and it was the equivalent of landing in a desert. Poor fishing!!! Headed north to the dredge holes around the West Bank area, but this too provided poor results. Decided that the only way we had a shot at catching anything was to jump in Ambrose Channel with horrible conditions, and throw everyone into the fire. We had some colossal tangles ,some shorts, and occasional keeper. It was enough to keep everyone busy for a while. Once the tide eased up we began to pick the fish. Majority were shorts, but the ever elusive keeper did come over the rail. Today's high hook had 5 keepers, and the pool winner was Barker, Hoboken, NJ, with a 5 3/4 pound fluke.

August 08, 2008

Friday, 8/8/08 Report

Another day of good fishing, but not so good keeping. We caught a ton of fish, and threw most back. Today's high hook had 3 fish, and the pool winner was a 4 1/2 pound fluke caught by Steve Blashfield.

August 07, 2008

Thursday, 8/7/08 Report

We caught alot of fish today along Ambrose Channel, but the majority of the fish were undersized. It wasn't a good day keeping at all.

Captain George Scores it BIG!!!!

bilde.jpg     Our very own Captain George Boulieris scored it big over the weekend in the Ocean City White Marlin Open. Captain George was part of the crew that boated a 935.5 pound white marlin to win the tournament. Click here to read story.

Wednesday, 8/6/08 Report

8.6.08.pool.jpg     Slow start to the day. Took a long time to get things going, but they eventually did. The keeper ratio was horrible. It was not uncommon to catch 30 shorts with nothing or one fluke to show for it. Robert Bunnell, who was on his first fluking trip ever, won today's pool with a 4 1/2 pound fish.

Tuesday, 8/5/08 Report

8.5.08.pool.jpg     Disappointing day of fishing. We started our day in Sandy Hook Channel, where we left them biting yesterday, but unfortunatly they stopped bitting today. After a few unsuccessful drifts, we headed to Ambrose Channel and had the same results. No where near the action that we had over the past 3 days. We did see a couple of baby beasts come over the rail wieghing in at 6 1/2 pounds.

Monday, 8/4/08 Report

8.4.08.al.pool.jpg     Today was another good day of fluke fishing in the channels. Fished Sandy Hook Channel and had excellent fishing all day. The action was once again non - stop, however the keeper ratio was not too good. The majority of the fish were in the 16 1/2 to 17 1/2 range. Today's high hook was Bob Centamore with 6 keepers and the pool winner was Al Gallo with a 7 pound fluke.

Saturday & Sunday, 8/2/08 and 8/3/08 Report

We had excellent fishing over the weekend in Ambrose Channel. Both days were non stop with shorts and keepers. Some people made out better than others with the ratio. Tom Salerno tore it up on Saturday by catching his limit and passing a few extras off to a less fortunate angler. On Sunday we had the same fireball fishing, but the keeper ratio wasn't as good. John Bottles was high hook with 7 keepers.

Friday, 8/1/08 Report

We welcomed in August with a day of bad fishing. It was nothing like the past few days, actually it was quite the opposite. We had a 50 anglers and only 14 keepers. Conditions kept us from fishing where we have been the past couple of day. Ended up fishing a few miles east of where we were. Made a stop back in the Reach late in the day and found some fish, but it wasn't good by any means. Hopefully this was just a one day thing, and we can put a decent catch together for Saturday.
