Friday, 5/30/08 Report

The day started off good. We were on the same grounds as yesterday. Conditions were perfect with a west wind and outgoing tide together. Had good fishing during the outgoing. Keeping was another story. The ratio was way down from yesterday with many "BIG" shorts being caught. The action died down with the change of tide. Upon the incoming water, the wind shifted out of the south. Conditions were perfect again, but this time the fluke did not want to bite. The water temperature dropped a couple of degrees on the change, and this had an effect on the fishing. We need the water to warm up some, but it's not going to happen right now with all the south wind that is predicted for the weekend. Things will get going more consistently once the temps rise.

Thursday, 5/29/08 Report

5.29.08.jimmy.jpg   We found them today. Some said it would never be done with an 18 inch size limit, but today we had 2 limits on the boat.  The conditions were perfect to start the day with a west wind pushing us along with an outgoing tide. Starting catching fish immediately. Keeper ratio was very good for some. Jimmy Chambers and Al Skowronski both caught their limit of fluke.

Today's Pool Winner

5.29.08.pool.jpg   Today's pool was won by Jill Witzl. Jill caught fire midway through the day and was able to land this beast to take the pot.

Man On Fire

5.29.08al.jpg    There is a new sheriff in town, and his name is Al!!!
Al Skowronski has started the 2008 Fluke Season off with a bang. Sunday he put 7 keepers in his bucket, and today he caught his limit. Way to go Al. Just like the "Real Men of Genius", we salute you!!!

Wednesday's Pool Winner

5.28.08ken.jpg    Kenny Havens showed why he is called "The Legend" around these parts by battling through a tough day of fishing to capture today's pool winner. Around mid day there were reports of "The Legend" digging deep inside of his tackle box and rigging a "Banjo Minnow" on his line to seal the deal.
P.S. Where is the "Legend Killer" when we need him. M.I.A.

Wednesday, 5/28/08 Report

ken.n.tom.jpg    Pretty poor day of weather and fishing today. Started in the back of the bay where we had good fishing on Sunday. Drifting conditions were good with a very hard north wind, but of course, no fluke. Worked the channel and then headed to the flats outside of our harbor. After more disappointment we headed north to Great Kills and managed to get a very slow pick going. Only ended up with a few keepers on the boat. "The Legend" Kenny Havens, Hoboken, NJ, battles through a tough day to win the pool.

Monday, 5/26/08 Report

5.26.08.jpg    Disappointing day of fishing today. Started where we left them biting yesterday, but it just didn't happen. We had good conditions with a hard west wind pushing us down the channel. Tried working in the area we caught them the best , but eventually we had to move on. Worked our way east all the way to the Belford Flats, but could only get a slow pick going at the best. Wasn't as bad as Saturday, but not nearly as good as yesterday. Water temps are still cold for this time of year. The highest we read was 69 degrees. We'll try again tomorrow!!

Sunday, 5/25/08 Report

5.25.08.jpg    Today we changed the area up completely from yesterday, and it paid off!! Fished the western side of the bay, where conditions were favorable when we left the dock, but wouldn't you know, 20 minutes after we drop the lines, the wind shifted out of the west just enough to hold us up against a very light flood tide. Fortunately for us, it didn't matter. The fluke wanted to eat! Had a good pick for most of the day. High hook had 7 keepers, with many people keeping 4 and 5 fish. Today's pool winner was a 4 pound fluke.

Saturday, 5/24/08 Report

5.24.08.b.jpg Started our day at our usual opening day fluke spot off the Coast Guard station at Sandy Hook. Water temperature was 57 degrees (which is still a little too cold) and wouldn't you know it -we had wind against tide! Fishing wasn't great so we changed the area and went outside the hook into the ocean, and still could only muster up a slow pick. Tried a few different places but couldn't get anything consistent going. Lenny Borer caught the first keeper for this season, and Chris (sorry can't recall his last name) won today's pool. Overall the day wasn't great but we got a start!

Getting The Season Started

4.24.08.jpg    Lenny Borer offically started the 2008 Fluke Season for us by catching this 20 inch Fluke.

Sunday, 5/18/08 Report

5_19_08bass.jpg    We made it out today and headed to Old Orchard in hopes of catching the "Always Elusive" striped bass. Anchored up and caught nothing. After the change of tide around 8:30 we noticed some surface life to the east. Headed to the ocean and had a hour of pretty good fishing on jigs. Alot of bluefish with some good sized bass below them. Had two limits on bass and a couple of other people with one bass a piece. Once the "Hour of Power" was over, we continued to stop on some good readings, but the best had passed.

Blog Update

boat91.jpg    I know that there are some gaps in the time line of my posts. This is because we have not been sailing regularly. Just like many other businesses in today's economy, we are having a VERY slow spring. However, I prefer to look at our situation as being the glass is half full. With the upcoming Fluke season beginning in just over a week, and the summer season still on the horizon, I am looking forward to fishing with all of you, and continuing to keep everyone informed on the many great catches we will put together.

Wednesday, 5/15/08 Report

5-7-08b.jpg   It was nice to be out fishing today after a week of sitting at the dock. The weather had us tucked away for a few days behind Staten Island, and we didn't sail the other couple of days because of lack of customer participation.
Started the morning fishing Scotland. There was a big roll in the ocean that was expected after all of the east wind that we had for the past few days. We anchored up and began catching silver eels of the biggest kind. A couple of them weighed in around 10 pounds. The ling fishing never really got going because the storm we had earlier in the week had them bunkered down. Typically after a nor'easter, bottom fish such as ling and sea bass, will seek shelter in whatever type of structure they are around. On the other hand, the silver eels which spend most of their time inside of the rocks, wrecks, or whatever else they may be in, come out and patrol the area looking for food. This is what happened today. It looked like maybe the ling fishing would turn on very late. We had ok shot of them on our last drop. We stayed as long as we could and scraped up another half dozen or so to end the day. 5-15-08.jpg

Wednesday, 5/7/08 Report

5-7-08.jpg   The weather was beautiful, and the Ling fishing was very good. The average catch was 20 Ling per angler. We saw a few keeper Sea Bass and 1 keeper Cod also.

Schedule Update

We will be changing our schedule this week. For our daily 7:30 - 2:30 trips, we will be jigging for Bluefish and Bass.

Ling Fishing On Wednesday's

Just a reminder that Captain Marty Haines will be running the boat for our Special Wednesday Ling Trips. We leave the dock at 7:30am and return at 4:00pm.

Sunday, 5/4/08 Update

We haven't sailed over a week, so I have absolutely nothing to report. Better times are hopefully ahead.
