The fishing bounced back today after a few days of tough fishing. Started the morning off Keansburg, and had fish on immediately. Made a couple of drifts, and headed to the eastern side of the Reach Channel. Again we had a good shot of fish to start, but as the tide changed, the fishing slowed. Once we started getting some incoming water, we headed to the Knoll, and had a good pick of shorts and keepers. Today's pool winner was a 8.5 pound Fluke, and high hook was 7.
Today started much like yesterday. We headed for the western side of the bay, and had a light west wind with an outgoing tide. After a few drifts there with no luck we headed to the middle of the Reach Channel. No success there either. It looked as if today was going to be a wash also, but after the tide change we headed to the Knoll. We did see some fish here, however the majority of them were short. We did pick an occasional keeper here and there. It was a good sign after a couple of days of tough fishing. Today's high hook had 5 fish, and the pool winner was 3 1/2 pounds.
Headed to the western side of the Reach to begin the day. We had a decent shot of fish to start off, but that didn't last. We hung in the back of the bay until the tide change, and started working our way east. We picked a few fish on each stop, but it was not good at all. Made our way to Earle to finish the day, but more of the same. Tough day all around. Today's pool winner was a 5 pound Fluke and high hook had 6 keepers.
OK fishing today. We fished all along the Reach, and Chapel Hill Channel, and had a slow pick of fish. We had some shots here and there, but overall it seemed slow. When I started to go around the boat and fillet, I realized that they did add up for some, and I was being a little tough on the day. High hook was 7, and today's pool winner was Dave Plumacher with a 4 pound Fluke.
Left the dock in a hurry this morning to catch the last bit of outgoing water. The wind was out of the west again, and once the tide changed, we would have no drift. Started in the middle of the Reach Channel where we saw all those bigger fish this past week, but the fish have moved from the channel. We did not see one fish. Made a move to a ledge just south of where we were fishing, and found a good body of fish. Super fishing for the last hour and a half of the tide. After the tide changed, the wind increased quite a bit. We made a few more drifts on the ledge, and then worked our way west to the flats around our buoy. We did catch a few here, but not enough for us to stay. Tried a couple of other spots in hopes of finding the larger fish that we were seeing, but the lack of drifting conditions made it impossible. We did have one person with their limit, and a few others with 5, and 6 fish. Steve Kerry was todays pool winner with a 3 pound Fluke.
We took one on the chin today. Wind against tide all day. Unable to fish anywhere that we have been fishing. Made a few long drifts on th Reach, but absolutely no movement. Tried a few move different spots from Sandy Hook Channel, to Port Monmouth Beach, but no luck. Definitely the worst day so far fishing for Fluke, and it can be directly blamed on the conditions. Today's high hook was George Cariglia who had 5 fish. George was also today's pool winner.
Wind against tide was the story for most of today. Headed to the western side of the Reach to begin the day. Not much happening back there yet, so we went off to where we have had our best fishing the last few days. We SLOWLY picked some fish. We had no movement at all. After an hour we were off to the point of the Hook. We did pick some shorts and keepers around the tip. Made our last few drifts around the Ammo pier, and found a few more keepers there mixed in with the shorts, and Sea Robins. High hook today was 6 fish, and the pool winner was around 3 pounds. Overall, it was a little bit of a slow day. We saw alot more shorts, and Robins then we have seen the last couple of trips.
I am sorry for the delay with the updates the past two days. I worked both trips, morning and night, and just did not have the time to post the reports. Sorry again!!
AHHHhhh!!!! You have to love June in New Jersey!!! Overcast, east wind around 15 knots, and 55 degrees. What a day. . . We started at the Coast Guard Station on Sandy Hook, and surprisingly caught the Fluke pretty well. We had alot of fish in the morning. The keeper ratio was down again, but because we were catching so many fish, there were a good amount of keepers mixed in. This fishing only lasted a few hours though. Once the tide started running good, the fish turned off. Bounced around to a few different spots around Sandy Hook, but couldn't get them to bite again. High hook was 6 keepers, and the pool fish was around 5 pounds. Alot of fish caught, but a horrible keeper ratio today.
Fishing improved today. We fished the tip of Sandy Hook all day, and caught a mix of shorts, and keepers. The keeper ratio was down, but we did catch alot of fish.
One word can sum up today's fishing. Disappointing!! We made drifts everywhere from the western end of the Reach, to Chapel Hill Channel, to The Coast Guard Ledge, and caught some fish on every drift, but not enough keepers on any of them. Had outgoing water for most of the trip. The tide changed around noon. Set up for the incoming where we have had some really good fishing the past couple of days, but more disappointment. Couldn't get anything consistent anywhere. Kenny Havens, Hoboken, NJ, was today's high hook with 6 keeper Fluke up to 4 pounds.
Fished around Sandy Hook again today. Picked at the shorts and keepers. Fishing was good. A definite improvement from yesterday.
The wind and rain from yesterday really put a hurting on the fishing today. Started at the point of Sandy Hook. We couldn't fish outside because of a giant roll in the ocean. Caught mostly shorts. Moved around quite a bit between the Hook, and Ammo Pier. Very little bit, and what did was mainly shorts. Made a move further to the west around Port Monmouth, and finished the day with a pick of shorts, and a good shot of keepers mixed in. This is a good sign that shows that the Fluke are moving into the western part of the bay. Overall it was a slow day of fishing, but that can be directly attributed to the weather we had over the last 24 hours. High hook had 4 keepers, and Mike Butler, South River, NJ, won today's pool with a 4 pound Fluke.
One word. . . .Women! Mother Nature kept us at the dock today. I guess I can't complain. She hasn't been that rough on us in a couple of weeks. See you tomorrow.
I have to make this a fast report. Have to get back to boat for the night trip. Today's fishing was good. Alot more shorts than we have seen the past few days. We caught two big fish weighing in at just over 8 pounds. We went through a lull in the action during the tide change around 9:30. Had difficult conditions with the wind and tide after the change. 8 - 10oz. sinkers were the norm. Found our best fishing in the deep of Sandy Hook Channel. Today was not as good as yesterday, but it was ok. Frank Moltisanti, Cranford, NJ, and George Krenick, Bridgewater, NJ, tied for today's pool with a pair of 8.5 pound Fluke's.
